Zhangjiagang Yonggang Group Electric Arc Furnace Comprehensive Treatment

This project, implemented in 2013, was the largest SVG compensation application for electric arc furnaces in China at the time. As part of Yonggang Group’s technological upgrade, it introduced a short-process production line integrating a 110t electric arc furnace, LF ladle furnace, VD vacuum refining unit, continuous casting machine, and rolling mill. The system faced severe power quality issues, including voltage flicker, leading to low production efficiency.

 

Instead of the mainstream SVC solution, the project adopted a superior SVG+FC comprehensive treatment approach, delivering better performance. The system was configured with a 35kV/40Mvar delta-connected SVG and FC (40Mvar fundamental frequency, 3rd and 5th harmonic filtering).

 

Since commissioning, the SVG system dynamically adjusts its reactive power, negative-sequence, and harmonic compensation strategies in real time based on load fluctuations, optimizing capacity utilization and mitigating voltage flicker, harmonic distortion, and imbalance. The project was recognized by the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering, stating "The overall technology has reached an internationally advanced level, with leading-edge DC voltage balance control and rapid comprehensive compensation for reactive power, negative sequence, and harmonics."
